There was a time, not so long ago, when the Ariel Square Four was considered among the most interesting, sophisticated and desirable of classic motorcycles. Priorities have shifted over the decades, and this remarkable design seems to have taken a back burner for enthusiasts. The upside for independent thinkers is the recent dramatic uptick in values for multi-cylinder motorcycles has for the moment passed over the Ariel, which means this is the perfect time to buy one. The Ariel Square Four was originally designed by Val Page as an overhead-camshaft production four-cylinder roadster, the 1931 Model 4F, which was an almost outer-space specification in 1935. The initial engine capacity was 500cc, which grew to 600cc the next year. A redesign of the motor in 1936 brought the new Model 4G to a full 1000cc, at which point it entered Superbike territory, with a top speed of 90 miles per hour, and completely civilized manners. Postwar, the Mark 1 weighted 435 pounds, and had telescopic forks up front, and a sophisticated trailing-link/plunger rear suspension. The Mark II was introduced in 1953, with aluminum cylinder barrels and heads, and distinctive four-pipe exhaust – this model was capable of a full 100 MPH, with much cooler running, and terrific looks. The Ariel Square 4 MkII is among the most innovative and interesting machines to emerge from the British motorcycle industry, with performance few other bikes (even from later decades) could equal–the incredible smoothness of a four-cylinder motor, the sophisticated construction of the overall machine, the beauty of its engine castings, and its remarkable 10 MPH to 100 MPH performance in top gear. This 1957 Ariel Square 4 MkII received a nut and bolt restoration, which was completed in September 2015. The engine was fully rebuilt with new rod bearings, valves and guides, and the cylinders re-sleeved to standard bore.
