Introduced at the height of the muscle-car era, the first-generation Javelin was a remarkable car from the American Motors Corporation, a firm that was feeling pressure to keep up with the volume and cost structure of the Big Three U.S. car manufacturers. The introduction of the model was well received by the automotive press with “Motor Trend” magazine putting the Javelin at the top of the "sports-personal" category in its annual "Car of the Year" issue, saying it was "the most significant achievement for an all-new car" and "the most notable new entry in [its] class.”

Captivated by the history of the Trans Am Series, the current owner had long searched for the ultimate performance Javelin. His journey ultimately took him to AMC collector and expert Ed Buscis of California. Interested in finding a car that had been vetted by objective standards, he was impressed that Buscis’ car had earned a “Gold” award in the Javelin “Stock” class in AMO-sanctioned judging, as well as earning the coveted Bud Truex award which (according to Buscis), was presented after this Javelin was chosen from more than 300 other judged AMC cars at a national event.

Powered by AMC’s ultimate power plant (introduced in mid-1968 as the 390-cubic-inch engine), its impressive 315 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque were capable of sending the Javelin from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the 7-second range, an impressive result for a car of the era. In addition to the 390 engine, the Go Package featured power front disc brakes, heavy-duty suspension, twin-grip limited-slip differential, dual exhausts with chromed outlets, and Magnum 500-styled road wheels.

The Mod Package accentuated the cars “mean” image and consisted of a "Craig Breedlove" roof-mounted spoiler, simulated "exhaust" rocker trim moldings, and twin blacked-out air scoops on the hood. This car was also ordered in “Big Bad” paint scheme (three colors were offered new, consisting of either neon brilliant blue, orange or green). As a result of this paint option, the car came with matching front and rear painted bumpers, as well as two vertical rubber-faced painted bumper guards for the rear and a special bright lower grille molding for the front bumper. Finally, to top it off, the SST package was added to this vehicle which consisted of additional appearance and comfort items that included reclining front seat backs, simulated wood-grain door panel trim, a sports-style steering wheel. Additional options include with power steering, power brakes, factory AM/eight-track sound system and a heavy-duty Borg Warner M-12 automatic transmission.

After deciphering it was the best available car of its type, the current owner purchased the car from Buscis in late 2005. Since that time the owner has further researched, authenticated and continually improved multiple items on the car. Initially unhappy with the interior, it was completely replaced and all new carpeting, seat covers and more were installed. At the same time new factory-original side glass was added. To his amazement, the car's true value became even more evident to the current owner with the interior removed. The inside of both doors and both rear quarter areas showed no signs of ever having been rusted or repaired—all virgin factory sheet metal. The original floors were pristine, still bearing their original factory paint, with absolutely no signs of accident damage or panel replacement anywhere on the entire car. Given that these cars were prone to rust in various areas, this California-car is “good to the bones.”

If one were to seek the ultimate “end of an era” AMC muscle car, it would be very difficult to find a better candidate than this authentic “Big Bad Javelin” with its multitude of options. The car’s California history, original engine and drivetrain and aggressive look present a rare find in the world of AMC muscle cars.
